In the wake of natural calamities, rapid emergency response can mean life or death. When earthquakes occur, it is imperative for the Coast Guard to quickly communicate to the Navy and report sightings of high waves or possible tsunamis. In a real-world scenario, miscommunication and faulty equipment could fail to broadcast the danger of an oncoming tsunami to the populace, causing mass casualties that a solid alert system could have prevented.
The Coast Guard, in this specific case, was utilizing simple commercial laptops, but on many occasions, these devices were prone to being damaged in use, which meant needing multiple repairs or replacements. These laptops were not designed to withstand the necessary stresses such as saltwater, rough handling, high waves, sand, and extreme temperatures for emergency response technology in a coastal environment. This made them unreliable tools— prone to failure, leading to unacceptable downtime in critical situations.
Switching over to Rugged laptops was the solution. Getac’s S410 was the ideal fit for the Coast Guard vehicles that would patrol different points along the coast. It could be stored in a protective case along with other key Coast Guard equipment, such as a satellite telephone that can connect to the device, VHF/UHF radios, and flares. In addition, Getac offered to stock up on spare parts for the chosen S410 configuration and even kept buffer stock units that could be readily used if any device were to be damaged.
During the partnership, Getac was in close communication with the Navy’s IT engineers to meet all the specifications for this emergency response technology , easing the client’s worries about service turnaround time in case of damage. In the event of possible tsunamis, where first responders and emergency personnel rely heavily on technology to coordinate efforts, it’s key that the devices used are like the S410, reliable and robust for fast deployment, ultimately contributing to the safety and well-being of these communities during times of crisis.
