EMBRACE CHALLENGE, EVOLVE BEYOND

At Getac, we've always cherished the wealth of insights and experiences generously shared by our customers and partners. While we've been committed to launching human-centric innovative devices in the past, we've realized there's so much more we can do.
This year, inspired by the International Women’s Day, we extend a heartfelt invitation for you to join us on an inspiring journey towards evolving a truly inclusive workplace. As a starting point, we're providing professional equipment to brave Fire Angels, supporting their adventurous endeavors in Antarctica. Find out more about their story below.
Internally, at Getac, we are steadfast in our commitment to cultivating a more welcoming working environment, aligned with the values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). We recognize that the journey towards inclusiveness is an ongoing process, with no fixed endpoint. Yet, through collective efforts, we envision a world that is more diverse, equitable, and inclusive, waiting to unfold before us.

to conquer the journey

In November 2023, two women firefighters, Georgina Gilbert and Rebecca Openshaw-Rowe, embarked on a skiing mission from West Antarctica to the South Pole, a distance of 1,230 kilometers at altitudes ranging from 800m to 3km above sea level. They would become the first emergency services professionals to ski unsupported to the South Pole and the first people to ski the route.
Representing the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) and Mid & West Wales Fire Service, the pair braved temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius and hauled supply sleds weighing more than 110 kilograms and 121 kilograms respectively. Added to the extreme cold, wind speeds above 60 mph were common. The expedition took a total of 52 days, 10 hours and 32 minutes, seeing the intrepid emergency responders cover up to 28 km over 11 to 11.5 hours of skiing per day. “You are doing about 70,000 steps a day, and you fight for each one of those steps,” said the firefighters.
Getac’s UX10 rugged tablet was in their supplies, and it provided much needed relief at the end of a grueling day as a means of entertainment. The pair recharged it every two to three days using a solar panel. “It was a level of normality, and a reassurance as we didn’t have to worry about cracking the screen as it was being tossed about,” says the firefighters. “It was pivotal in helping us stay motivated.”
The firefighters believe everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their ambitions, and that women and girls can suffer from stereotyping that prevents them from realizing their capabilities and talent. To combat this they wanted to demonstrate what is possible and serve as role models for prospective adventurers. “We hope this will influence the next generation of women in the public safety industry,” said the firefighters. “We passed four teams throughout the expedition and they were all male, which reminded us of the difference we were making and what we were achieving.”
Their message to potential woman fire and rescue recruits is to “be brave and take the first step, but also have fun trying, and reach out if you need help. This can be through social media or your local fire station. Knock on the door and someone will be there to help. But mostly, believe in yourself. Four years ago, we couldn’t ski, and we didn’t know what an expedition was. We believed in ourselves and made it happen.”
Getac has consistently prioritized public safety, dedicating itself to supporting frontline personnel in swiftly and efficiently responding to incidents. We are proud to have been part of this journey in helping Georgina and Rebecca stay upbeat and connected in the face of challenging environmental and weather conditions. Funds raised will go to The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides confidential, personalized support to the entire fire services community in the UK and Australia. This involves providing mental and physical health and social wellbeing services remotely, online and in communities.
