Infrastructure is an exact science that is heavily reliant on location coordinates. For field engineers working in the Utilities sector, it is essential to have a highly precise and accurate GPS to properly locate the position for field maintenance, repair, or construction. To work most efficiently, the GPS location accuracy must be within 5 cm for engineers to determine the positioning before they officially begin the work.
Collecting inaccurate location data can derail a Utilities project significantly, setting back important work when it comes to new construction or maintenance. Aside from falling short on accuracy and precision when it comes to GPS functionality, off-the-shelf devices have been known to have high failure rates in the field, meaning they are not reliable products that can withstand the processing load or environmental stressors they are exposed to. Because Utilities fieldwork is very rugged, this leads to more instances of the devices being sent to service centers for repairs, increasing costs, wasting time, and hampering overall efficiency.
In this specific scenario, the client was seeking a more precise RTK GPS that could also work under an Android operating system. Getac was willing to customize an existing solution, the ZX10, to exactly meet the customer’s technical requirements. The GPS board was customized to support the PTK GPS. Unlike traditional GPS, which only relies on satellite data, RTK GPS systems use additional data from a nearby base station to improve the accuracy. Taking the thickness of the tablet into account as well, an antenna was fitted, to keep within the specific 5cm margin of error allotted for the engineers.
Getac was able to customize a solution to not only meet the client’s technical requirements but also address key improvements based on existing standard products that have fallen short in the past. By adding an antenna and RTK GPS to the ZX10, the utility company was able to procure a generally durable and high-quality solution for fieldwork, while also achieving the level of data precision needed to do infrastructure construction, maintenance, and repair in the most efficient manner possible.
