MILITARY (AIR FORCE)
The military uses devices with PCMCIA readers to plan and execute flight plans and missions. A PCMCIA card is a credit card-sized memory or input/output (I/O) device that fits into a PC, usually a laptop. These are designed to withstand harsh conditions, making them well-suited for military applications. PCMCIA cards are also expandable, meaning they can add additional functionality to devices like storage, network interfaces, encryption modules, and more. Aside from that, they’re portable, easy-to-install, secure and their design is compatible across different units and branches of the military.
With consumer-grade devices, an adaptor may be necessary to even utilize the PCMCIA feature. For mission-planning, the Air Force needed a device with an additional PCMCIA reader, but one that still operated at a good speed. Because USB and other more modern interfaces have become more common in newer devices, the issue with most high-speed computers is that they are no longer made with multiple PCMCIA readers.
Getac customized the S410 rugged laptop to be able to use 2 PCMCIA readers in a single device, by adding a PCMCIA reader into the Battery Bay. This adjustment added an important capability to the device, allowing it to be used on more air frames. This expands the functionality of military computers and communication equipment by opening up room for peripheral functionalities. In addition, a new rubber door was placed on the PCMCIA IO port to maintain the S410 IP (Ingress Protection) rating, where electrical enclosures are protected against dust, water, and other foreign body intrusions.
Even though newer computer models are being designed without PCMCIA readers, the military is a sector that still utilizes them for mission planning and operations. Getac steps up by offering custom solutions that combine modern, rugged device builds with this industry-specific feature. Because of this, the Air Force does not need to compromise on device speed, modern functionality, or the traditional operations that have worked for them for years.
