Given that 4G and LTE are still inaccessible in deep, remote locations or areas with a high amount of metal infrastructure like mines, WiFi is still one of the most popular ways to digitize operations. When mines are being explored or developed, WiFi access points are set up to pass the signal from the origin to the nearest access point and onto the next until the one closest to the end user. However, most consumer-grade laptops or tablets only have internal antennas, which have a poor signal when field workers are too far from the WiFi tower or APs. This limits the range of mining connectivity and, thus, the working area for key data-heavy operations. WiFi issues cause downtime, which could delay ongoing tasks and incur high costs due to expensive equipment and specialized employees such as geologists, safety inspectors, IT engineers.

THE TAILORED SOLUTION

Customizing a rugged device for an external antenna to ensure better signal

Customizing the Getac F110 device by adding an SMA connector through a customized I/O Port allows it to connect to a rugged external antenna. This significantly boosts the ability of the device to get a strong WiFi signal and establish a more solid connection to the net, covering a wider area. Geological engineers rely on this connection to upload or download live measurements of drill hole deviation, spatial data, and rock formation variations or to access their GIS mapping equipment. This allows them to do this intensive and dangerous work efficiently and accurately. For field data processing, these custom units are "spec and select". They can even be given a higher RAM or the Intel® Core i7 processor processing for 3D mapping, drilling plans, audit compliance, and more.
