Devices with hardware-based restrictions often do not meet security standards

For this particular manufacturing company, their current devices were simply not built with data security as a top-priority. Since they were using standard-grade laptops, all the I/O ports were open without doors, which was not secure enough for their liking. Since they dealt with confidential information, the device needed to be highly secure, which meant ensuring that the user could not use the data transfer function to download or upload information. 

THE TAILORED SOLUTION

Tailor-made laptops offer more flexibility and protection

The company used a Getac S410 laptop to provide customer support and maintenance on their own high-tech solution. To meet their needs of enhanced data and cyber security protection, the device was customized with two main features: 

1) BIOS settings: including a BIOS password setting and a BIOS enable/disable function for WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G, and USB ports
2) A secure door to block the I/O port: this was done with a bracket cover and a special temper screw that allowed for the flexibility to open the door when needed.         

This was thoughtfully done to lower the device management effort by creating a general configuration. That way, based on their own customer’s requirements, they could decide to enable or disable the functions or the I/O ports easily.
