Superior Touchscreens Suited for Navy Aircraft Maintenance
Eliminating Dangerous “Ghost Touch” Through Resistive Touchscreens

DEFENSE (NAVY)

TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS

THE INDUSTRY & COMPANY
The Navy performs routine maintenance procedures on aircraft carriers
Aircrafts used in the Navy require continuous and regularly scheduled maintenance, typically done on aircraft carriers. During these support periods, a variety of tests are performed on various aircraft systems. These checks keep aircraft and aviation equipment in top working order, making them vital to both safety and operational readiness for these military fleets.
THE CHALLENGE & PAIN POINTS
Exposure to rain causes “ghost touch” on device screens that may trigger dangerous events
Since these maintenance procedures are typically conducted on aircraft carriers or land-based flightlines, the environment is open-air and exposed to all kinds of weather and climate. The devices that act as the main tools for maintenance checks must be fully operational in any condition—in rain, extreme temperatures, or even the direct heat or brightness of the sun. Off-the-shelf devices have sensitive capacitive touch screens that are susceptible to registering phantom inputs from rain, making them highly dangerous to use in these environments. The fear is that this “ghost touch” could potentially trigger an accidental engine startup or a similarly damaging, unintentional event.
THE TAILORED SOLUTION
Adding an all-weather single-touch resistive screen to a proven rugged solution
Getac integrated a single-touch resistive touchscreen and a new LCD plastic cover onto the B360 rugged laptop. Resistive touchscreens are less sensitive than capacitive touch screens, allowing them to perform better in rain and ignore phantom inputs while still responding to finger, stylus, or glove inputs seamlessly. Apart from this use-specific customisation, the B360 model already has a rugged build that withstands water, dust, shock, vibration, and therefore allows it to perform in any type of weather, temperature, or extreme climate. That, along with the high-capacity battery life, sunlight-readable display, and light-weight portability, make for a solution tailor-made for Navy aircraft maintenance.
THE RESULTS & BENEFITS
Increased safety and efficiency for high-risk maintenance work
The weather-resistant custom screen fitted onto the B360 successfully reduced uncontrolled input from rain, leading to a lower threat of accidents occuring in an environment as high-risk as an aircraft carrier. In this case, the Navy was able to maintain the core functionality of the tools being used for aircraft maintenance tasks while adding a better and safer user experience around the touchscreen. This functionality allows the users to do their work without interruption and maintain their operational efficiency regardless of the unpredictable weather conditions they will undoubtedly face on the job.
