Precise underground geo-positioning
IP65 water tolerances
Leipzig Waterworks provides water and sewer services to the Greater Leipzig area, and is a long-time user of rugged tech. They needed computers that can handle the elements, underground geo-positioning, and run their custom software. They chose Getac.
Water and sewer providers need tech built for the elements, usable underground, easy to operate while working, and waterproof.
Leipzig Waterworks provides drinking water and wastewater treatment for almost 700,000 people in Greater Leipzig, with both networks combined covering a length of over 6,400km. Onsite technicians ensure smooth operation of this infrastructure, with onsite conditions often quite diverse during survey and work. Indoors. Outdoors. Day and night. Winter cold. Summer heat. Equipment must be ready to go at a moment’s notice, easy to operate in awkward conditions, and not quit until the job is done. “We tested robust devices from various manufacturers over several weeks,” explains Heribert Schwarz, team leader for geoinformation. “We developed an evaluation matrix with criteria such as weight, display quality, robustness, ease of use, functionality, and price. Not least because of the excellent personal impression, Getac emerged the favorite.”
The Getac V110 fully-rugged notebook-tablet convertible offered the power and value for the money that Leipzig Waterworks was looking for.
The V110 is a thin, versatile, and very popular 11.6” Windows convertible notebook, capable of easy transformation between a laptop and tablet form-factor, and fully-rugged with MIL-STD-810H, MIL-STD-461G, and IP65 certification. With this device in place, Leipzig Wasserwerke no longer uses paper for field plans, now utilizing custom software modules in the field. In addition to main application areas such as survey, sewer inspection, network modification, house connection, or planning of cleaning and vehicle availability, precise test cycles are also carried out during maintenance of hydrants or fittings. With the help of the V110, tasks can be reliably processed, documented and, if necessary, marked for tracking on site, with all Getac hardware and accessories are provided by IT service and consulting firm Mettenmeier.
The Getac V110’s ruggedness, efficiency, and user-friendliness ensure that Leipzig Waterworks can handle its daily workload reliably, while keeping its data up to date.
The V110 has been a major step forward, especially in the field, with the dedicated GPS enhancing team orientation, particularly underground. Real-time online access to plans saves an enormous amount of time, with the high-resolution front and rear camera optimizing survey, inspection, and documentation. The V110’s flexibility is another plus. Each Leipzig Waterworks field team consists of two employees and one vehicle. When travelling, keyboard use is often easier, with tablet-style touchscreen use often preferable onsite, via stylus or gloved finger, even when wet, thanks to Getac’s proprietary LumiBond 2.0 technology. “Getac’s V110 offers flexible operation: as a tablet or as a laptop,” emphasizes Schwarz. “After only a short period of getting used to the new hardware, our teams coped excellently and the changeover was effortless.”
We are definitely satisfied with the fully-robust V110. We were even able to do without warranty extensions or maintenance contracts with Mettenmeier, as there have been virtually no problems or breakdowns over the years; and even in this case, we would always have a replacement unit in stock. We would always choose Getac’s reliable and robust equipment again.
