Background

GEW Technologies has been the electronic warfare systems house for the South African National Defense Force for over 40 years. Today its systems are in use in many countries. Their expertise lies in conceptualization, development, implementation and support of systems for national defense forces, government institutions, and spectrum management authorities.

Challenge

GEW needed an advanced user terminal rugged enough for any battlefield, but light enough to be carried by infantry on any battlefield.

“Know thy enemy” is the first rule of war. Know their locations, numbers, and what they are talking about. Today this can be done through a subset of electronic warfare known as signals intelligence (SIGINT). Unguarded transmissions, from radios, mobile phones, radar, or microwave can all be intercepted and analyzed. SIGINT employs many different technologies, but three basic components. A collector, which identifies the signals to look for and pulls them out of the air. A receiver, which ‘translates’ the electronic signals into actionable information. And a man-to-machine interface to store and process the data. GEW’s mobile SIGINT solution has a mobile antenna as the collector and an ultra-compact, self-contained surveillance system with wideband RDF as the receiver. The third component is where Getac comes in.

Solution

After looking at competing solutions, and taking in customer feedback, GEW selected the Getac V110 fully-rugged convertible laptop for its optimal balance of performance, mobility, and ruggedness.

GEW’s SIGINT solution must go where duty calls. It can be mounted in an airplane or truck, or carried by infantry. And since GEW sells globally the V110 must be ready for any battlefield. Not only does it store SIGINT data, it also acts as an interface where soldiers utilize intelligence. And with its rugged lightweight design, easily convertible to tablet mode, the V110 offers mobility without sacrificing usability. The V110 runs on an Intel® Core™ i7 processor and Windows 10 OS, giving it enough processing power for GEW’s advanced SIGINT software. It also offers up to 1 TB of SSD storage, while its many I/O ports, such as USB 3.1 and LAN, offer simple easy receiver connection. The V110 is also certified to the MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461G, and IP65 standards, with GEW impressed to see customers using it in temperatures pushing 50°C, with the display at maximum intensity, without performance drop.

Benefits

GEW is very impressed with the V110’s seamless integration with their hardware and software, and with client feedback showing Getac preferred over alternatives.

The rugged, lightweight, high-performance V110 laptop extends the coverage of GEW’s SIGINT solution, significantly improving situational awareness on the battlefield. GEW also finds the overall stability and reliability of Getac solutions invaluable. Defense products have lengthy design cycles, requiring three years to develop, minimum. Getac can guarantee supply of the same computer with the same form factor and functions, and tirelessly upgrade it to run on the latest technology. GEW has used at least three generations of the V110. Project leaders have commended Getac’s flexibility and fast response time in order fulfillment and troubleshooting. Getac also has service centers around the world, and offers a three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty as standard. Considering the extreme environments armed forces operate in, this extra layer of protection is critically important.
